Identifying and Examining Dominant Social Norms

Abstract:  The field of engineering lags behind many others in accomplishing established diversity goals. Increasing diversity in organizations disrupts dominant social norms. Understanding how dominant social norms operate in organizations and the typical cycle of reactions is helpful for everyone invested in and leading organizational change.

Biography: Jennifer L. S. Chandler, Ph.D. teaches in the Leadership and Interdisciplinary Studies Program in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at ASU.  Her research on dominant social norms has resulted in several publications and presentations including: Colluding, Colliding, and Contending with Norms of Whiteness, published by Information Age Publishers in 2016; Examining Interactions with Dominant Social Norms, published in Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology; and Addressing Race and Culture within a Critical Leadership Approach, published in Global and Culturally Diverse Leaders and Leadership: New Dimensions, Opportunities, and Challenges for Business, Industry, Education and Society both released in 2017; as well as her upcoming book, Critical Leadership Theory: Integrating Transdisciplinary Perspectives, under contract with Springer.
