The Young Scholars Program at CBBG immerses participants in technical research and exposes them to the university experience as a whole, and specifically within the scope of the CBBG. Scholars are provided with a mentored research experience, participate in personal/professional development, enrichment activities, and present a poster based on biogeotechnical engineering research.
Program Overview
The Center for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) – funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) whose headquarters are located on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. The goal of the CBBG is to develop sustainable biologically-controlled and -inspired solutions in the areas of:
- Hazard mitigation
- Environmental protection and restoration
- Infrastructure construction
- Subsurface Exploration and Excavation
We are seeking innovative, sustainability-minded, local high school students interested in the disciplines of microbiology, biology, geochemistry, geology, civil engineering, plant science, soil science, geoenvironmental science, engineering education, or related areas, to participate in this paid program. This Young Scholars Program (YSP) will immerse participants in technical research and expose them to the university experience as a whole, and specifically within the scope of the CBBG. Scholars will be provided with a mentored research experience, participate in personal/professional development, enrichment activities, and present a poster based on biogeotechnical engineering research at the end of the program.
Program Details
- Mentored research experience
- $2000 stipend (housing and food are not provided)
- Spring 2024
- Program offered at Arizona State University and New Mexico State University
Program Eligibility
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- High school student
- Availability to schedule time in lab on campus (coordinate times with your team)
- Ability to work 130 hours throughout the duration of the program
- Parental permission
- Minimum age of 16 years by start of program
- Students from diverse groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM programs are encouraged to apply
